Abstract

An increase in population has occurred in the City of Surabaya, recorded in the 2020 BPS, a total of 25,723 residents from outside the city live in the City of Surabaya. This urbanization activity will have an impact on the expansion of the built-up area resulting in higher urban temperatures compared to the surrounding area, known as the Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI). Therefore, a study was conducted on changes in the distribution of SUHI on land cover in the city of Surabaya. This is important to get a reference in land use planning as an effort to reduce SUHI. By utilizing remote sensing technology using Landsat-8 imagery and processing using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) a spatial analysis of this phenomenon can be carried out. This processing brings the result that the SUHI phenomenon and land cover conditions change every year but with the same pattern trend. In 2014-2022, around 12000-13000 hectares of the Surabaya area are affected by SUHI which are spread across the city center. Built-up land class, vegetation and water bodies have a strong correlation with Land Surface Temperature (LST) with a correlation coefficient of 0.91 respectively; -0.61; and -0.64. Sufficient correlation occurs in open land objects with a correlation value of 0.48. This proves that SUHI-affected areas tend to be in the city center with the condition of the land being built-up land. Surface temperature increases in the open land class and decreases in the vegetation class.
