Abstract

The shipping industry requires protection against material degradation as it operates in the sea, which is one of the most corrosive environment. One of protection method is coating. Coating protects the material from reaction with the environment. The ASTM A36 steel which is used in the shipping industry, will be the used in this study. The surface material of the steel will be prepared with variations in the sand blasting process time of 95 seconds, 115 seconds and 135 seconds. The material will be coated with an epoxy mixture as a binder and variations in the addition of a mixture of aluminum powder as a pigment of 30%, 40% and 50%. From this research, it shows that the surface roughness value of sand blasting results increases with increasing sand blasting time with the lowest roughness value at time 95 seconds which result to 39.3 µm roughness. While the highest value at 135 seconds sand blasting time with a roughness of 69.3 µm . The corrosion rate is tested by electrochemical polarization test with 3.5% NaCl media representing a marine environment, showed that the addition of aluminum powder pigment to the epoxy coating resulted in a decrease in the corrosion rate. The highest corrosion rate results were found in a mixture of 30% aluminum powder, namely 0.60245 mmpy and the lowest, reaching 0.028311 mmpy in a mixture of 50% aluminum powder. The structure shown by Scanning Electron Microscopy shows platey aluminum powder pigments spread evenly on the layer.
