Abstract

Singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) structured optical fiber-based temperature sensors have been widely developed in various applications. Temperature measurement is one of the important applications of fiber optic sensors because electrical sensors cannot be used in places affected by electromagnetic interference. In this study, a temperature sensor was designed using ZrSiO4 material as a coating to increase the sensitivity of the sensor. ZrSiO4 has a low heat conductivity value, low thermal expansion coefficient, and is also resistant to high heat so it was chosen as the coating material for the SMS fiber optic temperature sensor. The effect of coating on sensor characteristics was analyzed using the intensity and transmission spectrum method measured in the range of 25-60 °C with an increase of every 5 °C. The test results obtained the highest sensitivity of 0,011238095 dBm / ° C for sensors with 1% coating, 8.8 times greater than the sensor without coating. Trasmission spectrum testing using Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA) obtained peak wavelength values vary in each sensor. The effect of ZrSiO4 on sensor characteristics can increase sensor sensitivity and reduce the difference in peak wavelength values due to temperature changes. The experiment proves that there is a shift in the wavelength spectrum, either positive due to changes in temperature or negative due to the addition of coating material.
