Abstract

Cooler adalah suatu alat untuk memindahkan panas dari suatu fluida ke fluida yang lain. Salah satu tipe dari alat penukar kalor yang banyak dipakai adalah alat penukar kalor jenis Shell and Tube. Kelayakan salah satu alat penukar kalor dapat diketahui dengan menghitung nilai fouling factor (Rd). Cooler pada unit Waste Water Treatment sudah tidak layak untuk beroperasi. Hal ini dapat terlihat dari perbedaan perubahan suhu fluida masuk dan suhu fluida keluar yakni dibawah 10°C. Sehingga, perlu dilakukan evaluasi melalui perhitungan nilai fouling factor (Rd) dan juga cleaning. Dari perhitungan hasil evaluasi, diperoleh nilai Rd aktual sebelum cleaning sebesar 1,52475 ; 2,37617 ; 1,30924 ; 0,79572 dan 0,51554 ft2°F/Btu sedangkan nilai Rd desain sebesar 0,04 ft2°F/Btu. Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kinerja cooler sudah tidak maksimal. Sehingga, perlu dilakukan cleaning. Sebelumnya, pihak WWT sudah melakukan cleaning dengan cara pemanggilan kontraktor dengan biaya Rp13.000.000,00 untuk satu kali cleaning. Biaya tersebut cukup mahal melihat kondisi cooler yang perlu dilakukan pembersihan rutin pada setiap bulannya. Sehingga, perlu dilakukan improvisasi metode cleaning dari mechanical cleaning ke chemical cleaning. Setelah menerapkan percobaan chemical cleaning menggunakan citric acid, dilakukan evaluasi kembali dengan menghitung nilai fouling factor (Rd). Didapat nilai Rd sebesar 0,03482 ; 0,03875 ; 0,03665 ; 0,01878 dan 0,00790 ft2°F/Btu. Nilai tersebut lebih kecil dibandingkan dengan Rd desain sehingga cooler dapat beroperasi dengan optimal dan mengalami peningkatan efisiensi kinerja dibandingkan sebelum dilakukan chemical cleaning. Dari hasil yang telah didapatkan, metode chemical cleaning berhasil meningkatkan kinerja cooler dan dapat diterapkan untuk jangka panjang.

Cooler is a equipment to transfer heat from one fluid to another fluid. One widely used heat exchanger type is the Shell and Tube type heat exchanger. The feasibility of a heat exchanger can be determined by calculating the value of the fouling factor (Rd). The cooler in the Waste Water Treatment unit is no longer fit for operation. This can be seen from the difference in changes in the temperature of the inlet fluid and the temperature of the outgoing fluid which is below 10°C. So, it is necessary to evaluate by calculating the value of the fouling factor (Rd) and also cleaning. From the calculation of the evaluation results, the actual Rd value before cleaning is 1.52475; 2.37617 ; 1.30924 ; 0.79572 and 0.51554 ft2°F/Btu while the design
Rd value is 0.04 ft2°F/Btu. These results indicate that the performance of the cooler is not optimal. So, it needs to be cleaned. Previously, WWT had carried out cleaning by calling a contractor at a cost of Rp. 13,000,000.00 for one cleaning. This cost is quite expensive considering the condition of the cooler which needs to be cleaned regularly every month. So, it is necessary to improvise cleaning methods from mechanical cleaning to chemical cleaning. After implementing a chemical cleaning experiment using citric acid, a re-evaluation was carried outconducted by calculating the fouling factor value. Rd value is 0.03482; 0.03875 ; 0.03665 ; 0.01878 and 0.00790 ft2°F/Btu. This value is smaller than the Rd design so that the cooler can operate optimally and experience increased performance efficiency compared to before chemical cleaning. From the results that have been obtained, the chemical cleaning method has succeeded in increasing the performance of the cooler and can be applied for the long term.
