Abstract

The national pulp and paper industry has promising prospects for future growth. It is supported by the increasing demand for packaging paper, cardboard, and tissue. The paper production process involves a series of steps that transform fibrous feedstocks into pulp. In the organosolv pulp production method, there are five stages: pre-treatment, pulping process, washing and separation, and ethanol recovery. The first step, pre-treatment, is carried out to reduce the size of the main raw material, which is empty palm fruit bunches. The pulping process is then conducted using ethanol in a pressurized digester at 15 atm. Subsequently, the pulp slurry is washed and separated from the lignin solution through filtration. Afterward, the pulp is dried using a tray dryer and stored in a pulp storage tank. The pulp plant using empty palm fruit bunches (EFB) is established in the Dumai Industrial Zone, Riau. The location is chosen due to the abundant availability of raw materials in the area (the largest oil palm land area in Riau and the presence of many CPO factories), ample water resources, sufficient electricity supply, an adequate workforce in the working age range, and a suitable legal and topographical environment for establishing the plant in the area. The economic analysis results indicate an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18%, Payback Period (POT) of 6 years, and Break Even Point (BEP) of 56%. Overall, the average IRR, BEP, and POT percentages demonstrate that establishing a pulp plant using empty palm fruit bunches and the organosolv method is feasible.
