Abstract

Young coconut shells are underutilized by the community, causing accumulation in some places. Even though the characteristics of young coconut shells that are not hard and have a distinctive fiber motif have the potential to be used as material for developing designs from processed coconut shell products on the market today. This study was conducted to determine the right treatment for processing young coconut shells using press techniques. In addition, this study aims to produce design innovations that are different from existing processed coconut shell products. Data collection in this study used interview techniques with several users and experts, then continued with observations of the availability of waste and processed coconut shell products, as well as Material Driven Design techniques to find the right characteristics and treatment in the processing of young coconut shell waste. Through the results of this experiment, it was obtained that the characteristics of young coconut shells that are not hard have the potential to be used as material for lamp products with new processing techniques. The press technique used also has the potential to produce a unique and different design of processed coconut coco shell products from before. On the other hand, the typical motif of young coconut shells can still be maintained, so that the resulting product can later display a natural impression. As a first step, the resulting product is a lamp series product. Furthermore, the design is tested on the target market to find out the suitability of the design to market needs and desires.
