Abstract

Jakarta is the city with the most congested traffic in Indonesia. During rush hours, this condition triggers interactions among road users that result in traffic accidents. As a result, Jakarta has become one of the cities with the most traffic accidents in Indonesia, with 6,141 incidents. This number is dominated by 73% of motorcycle users, including online taxi-bike drivers. The number resulted due to unsafe driving behaviors. This resulted in the number of deaths of online taxi-bike drivers has increased by 60% due to road traffic accidents. Therefore, this research aims to explore the factors influencing safety riding behavior of online taxi-bike drivers in Jakarta. In total, six variables are evaluated in hypotheses testing, including human influences (HI), smartphone usage behavior (SU), other road users’ driving behavior (RU), vehicle (V), environmental (E), and police and CCTV presence (PC). Data collection was performed by spreading questionnaires and direct interviews with 152 online taxi-bike drivers. These data are processed using PLS-SEM due to its ability to explore the research variables within their indicators. The results of data processing reported that environmental and vehicle factors have positive and significant relationships with safety riding behavior, while other indirect positive and significant relationships include environmental towards smartphone usage and vehicle, human influence towards smartphone usage, and police and CCTV presence towards other road users’ driving behavior. Several recommendations proposed for improving safety riding behavior are to always drive on the left side of the road and utilize rearview mirrors optimally; avoid getting closer to other vehicles; install water-resistant smartphone holders equipped with foam and rubber bands; initiate vehicle maintenance training; and record the maintenance actions of motorcycle components.
