Abstract

The concentration of greenhouse gases has reached an alarming rise. It is expected to increase the earth's temperature by up to 2 ℃. If all demands from the construction and operation of buildings are accumulated, then the building sector is responsible for 50% of global carbon emissions. Based on this background, this final project explores efforts to achieve Net-Zero Energy (NZEB) rental office with an adaptive reuse approach to an abandoned building. The design process uses a force-based framework and a repurposing scheme proposed by the author. Simulations using Ladybug for Grasshopper software are also utilized to guide the decision-making in the pre-design and post-design phases. The results show that the design could fully utilize the existing structure to reduce the need for new construction materials. Passive design strategies such as the stack effect, cross-ventilation, and solid-void façade concept are also integrated to further reduce cooling load. On the other hand, Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) and Photosensor LED Lighting systems are chosen as the efficient utility system that could reduce the building’s energy demand. On top of the energy-reducing strategies, Photovoltaic (PV) panels that could harness 404.1 mWh/m2 of clean energies with the addition of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) as a backup could cover the building energy use annually.
