Abstract

The consumption demand for broiler chicken is increasing as the population's nutritional needs grow. This leads to a rise in the use of packaging for broiler chicken. The massive production and disposal of chicken packaging can contribute to waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, further research is needed to assess the life cycle or Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of broiler chicken packaging in the Chicken Slaughterhouse (RPA). The LCA analysis is conducted using SimaPro software, considering a unit of 5,000 LDPE broiler chicken packaging with a cradle-to-gate boundary and ReCiPe impact database at midpoint and endpoint levels. The results show that the LDPE packaging production process has a total environmental impact of 175 Pt, with the largest category being human health at 165 Pt. The vacuum packaging process results in 1.34 kPt, with the largest category also being human health at 1.21 Pt. The blast freezing process generates 26.8 Pt, with the largest category being human health at 26.6 Pt. The cold storage process yields 12.9 Pt, with the largest category being human health at 12.9 Pt. The alternative packaging option is to substitute LDPE with a biopolymer, which results in a 86.5% more environmentally friendly impact.
