Abstract

Air pollution is one of the serious problems responsible not only for millions of deaths but also for massive economic losses. Anthropogenic pollution dominates the decline of air quality in large tropical cities like Jakarta. PM2.5 is one of the deadly pollutants for humans and has reached high concentrations in Jakarta over the past two years. This study aims to simulate the dispersion of PM2.5 to understand its characteristics and concentrations using WRF-Chem assimilation data. The study also aims to determine the ability of WRF-Chem assimilation data to simulate the dispersion of PM2.5 in Jakarta. PM2.5 can be simulated in terms of distribution and concentration within a limited domain with the help of WRF-Chem and the output of the model data. The use of assimilation data can improve initial conditions and boundaries, thereby improving the quality of the model output by up to 10%. Therefore, this study uses WRF-Chem with modified assimilation data methods. WRF-Chem has three main stages in producing model output: pre-processing, processing, and post-processing. The MAPE results indicate that WRFChem is not accurate in simulating PM2.5 with average value >70%. The pattern of model output distribution shows that in rainy months pollutants tend to be dispersed to the southeast and in dry months pollutants tend to be dispersed to the northwest. The average concentration of PM2.5 in dry months is higher than in wet months, both from observation results and model output, reaching 19,936 µg/m3 and 11,54 µg/m3 in DKI 3, and 21,808 µg/m3 and 15,72 µg/m3 in DKI 4
