Abstract
Industri pelapisan logam mengalami pertumbuhan yang signifikan karena permintaan yang tinggi. Hal ini mengakibatkan peningkatan jumlah limbah kromium yang beracun dan berbahaya di perairan. Sementara itu, bahan kemasan plastik, seperti polietilena tereftalat (PET), berkontribusi besar terhadap akumulasi limbah plastik setiap hari. Namun, PET berpotensi untuk digunakan sebagai bahan membran karena memiliki sifatnya yang dapat dibentuk menjadi film atau lapisan tipis. Tujuan dari penelitian adalah memanfaatkan PET sebagai bahan membran dengan modifikasi pengisi zeolit-Y untuk penghilangan kromium dalam air. Pada penelitian ini, membran PET dipreparasi menggunakan metode inversi fasa rendam endap dan dimodifikasi dengan zeolit NaY sebagai pengisi untuk meningkatkan kinerja membran. Hasil karakterisasi menunjukkan membran PET/zeolit-Y bersifat hidrofobik dengan porositas 81,67%; 81,14%; dan 79,92%. Hasil karakterisasi fourier-transform infra red (FTIR) menunjukkan pergeseran sedikit dalam bilangan gelombang pada membran PET/zeolit-Y yang mengindikasikan terbentuknya ikatan hidrogen antara PET dan pengisi. Sedangkan hasil karakterisasi scanning electron microscope (SEM) menunjukkan struktur pori membran PET tanpa dan dengan penambahan zeolit berupa pori menyerupai jari (finger-like). Dengan modifikasi penambahan zeolit-Y, persentase penghilangan kromium dalam air dengan membran berbasis limbah PET dapat ditingkatkan sebesar 15 kali lipat, dari 4,07% menjadi 61,08%. Kemudian, kinerja membran ditingkatkan lebih lanjut dengan penggabungan membran berlapis ganda berbahan dasar selulosa asetat (CA). Membran berlapis ganda yang terdiri dari CA (14% berat) - PET / Zeolit (0,5) menunjukkan efisiensi penyisihan yang baik sebesar 70,68%.

The electroplating industry has experienced significant growth due to high demand. This results to the rise of the presence of toxic and hazardous chromium waste in water sources. Conversely, plastic packaging materials, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), contribute substantially to the daily accumulation of plastic waste. However, it has the potential to be used as a filtration membrane material as it has the property of forming films or thin layers. The objective of this research is to make use of PET as membrane material with modification of zeolite-Y addition to remove chromium in water. In this study, the membrane fabrication process employing the immersion-precipitation phase inversion method was modified by varying the amount of filler (zeolite NaY) used, with the objective of enhancing membrane performance. The result of characterization shows that PET/zeolite-Y membranes are hydrophilic with the porosity of 81,67%; 81,14%; and 79,92%. The result of fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) characterization showed a slight shift in wavenumber of PET/zeolite-Y membrane which indicates that there might be some hydrogen bonds formed between PET and the filler. Meanwhile based on scanning electron microscope (SEM), it can be seen that PET membrane with or without zeolite-Y as filler has finger-like structure.The inclusion of zeolite resulted in a 15-fold increase in the penghilangan efficiency of the PET membrane, elevating it from 4.07% to 61.08%. Furthermore, the performance of the membrane was further enhanced through the incorporation of a double-layered membrane utilizing cellulose acetate (CA). A double-layered membrane consisting of CA (14 wt%)-PET/Zeolite (0.5) exhibited an impressive penghilangan efficiency of 70.68%.
