Abstract

The development of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is one solution for bridging the gap between energy demand and supply by utilizing Phase Change Materials (PCM). PCM can store and release a significant amount of latent heat through phase changes at a constant temperature. When using PCM, several aspects need to be considered, such as the degradation of heat storage capacity and the encapsulation material for PCM, given the corrosive behavior of some PCM. This research conducted experimental tests using the thermal cycle test method, gravimetric analysis for corrosion testing, and DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) test. The PCMs used were salt hydrates PCM A1-C20S0 (20 w.t.% CaCl2 + 80 w.t.% H2O) and PCM A2-C20S2C05 (20 w.t.% CaCl2 + 80 w.t.% H2O + 2 w.t.% SrCl2.6H2O + 0.5 w.t.% CMC), which underwent 250 thermal cycles ranging from -15oC to -25oC. Based on the corrosion test results, stainless steel was found to be the most compatible material for both variations of PCM used, as it had the lowest average corrosion rate compared to aluminum and copper. The addition of additive substances to PCM before and after 250 thermal cycles resulted in an increase in latent heat value, although the obtained latent heat value was lower than that of PCM without additive substances before and after 250 thermal cycles. This indicates that the addition of additive substances can reduce the latent heat value of the tested PCM. In the 250 thermal cycles, there was also a decrease in the freezing point, indicating a decrease in the thermophysical stability of the PCM.
