Abstract

Pocket operation in CNC milling as one of the fundamental metal removal processes is very commonly used in the manufacture of molds and dies, where the required production quality demands good tolerance and surface finish. The final product quality is determined by various cutting parameters. This circumstance will then determines the tool life based on the cutting conditions and tool wear that occur during the machining process. In this research, an experimental study was conducted on the effect of plunge rate and axial depth of cut in pocket CNC milling process on tool wear and workpiece surface roughness with ST 37 steel material. The plunge rate parameter variations used in this study are 25%, 30%, and 35% of the feed rate. While the axial depth of cut used are 10%, 12.5%, and 15% of the cutting tool diameter. The observed responses were tool wear and workpiece surface roughness. Experimental data were analyzed through statistical data processing using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression. The ANOVA results showed that plunge rate and axial depth of cut had a significant effect at the 5% confidence level on tool wear with a percentage of 16% and 24.6%, respectively. The largest tool wear value was obtained at a plunge rate of 57.75 mm/min and axial depth of cut of 1.5 mm. The smallest tool wear value was obtained at plunge rate 41.25 mm/min and axial depth of cut 1.00 mm. For the response to surface roughness, axial depth of cut has a more significant effect than plunge rate. The best surface roughness results were obtained at a plunge rate of 49.5 mm/min and axial depth of cut of 1.00 mm. The interaction results stated that there was no significant effect, meaning that there was no interaction between the two factors on the response of tool wear and surface roughness.
