Abstract

Indonesia has one endangered endemic mammal species, the Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas Cuvier, 1809). Panthera pardus melas is the last remaining large carnivore after the Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) was declared extinct by the IUCN in the 1980s. It is protected under Law No. 5 of 1990 and Government Regulation No. 7 of 1999. The current status is in the Endangered category and Appendix I of CITES. This study was conducted to determine the distribution and distribution pattern of Javan leopards in the area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS), namely Field I RPTN Jabung and Field II RPTN Candipuro. This research was conducted in several stages, including camera trap installation, camera trap retrieval, and data analysis of camera trap results. Species distribution analysis is processed using the ordination method with Canoco for windows 4.5 application, and distribution patterns are processed using standardized Morisita's index (Ip) analysis. The results of this study showed that the distribution of P.p melas in Jabung RPTN was found at three points of camera trap installation locations, namely points 1, 4 and 5. Whereas in Candipuro RPTN only 1 point was found and could not be further analyzed due to lack of data. The distribution pattern of P.p melas in Jabung RPTN shows a distribution pattern that tends to cluster (Id = 3), while the distribution pattern in Candipuro RPTN cannot be done based on the results of this study. This study provides important information about the distribution patterns of Javan leopards, which tend to cluster together without being related to solitary behavior, and there are certain location points that become habitat preferences, presumably related to the presence of prey, water, and other factors.
