Abstract

The Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) ITS car is one of the innovations in the automotive field amid the crisis of depleting non-renewable petroleum fuels every year. Currently, the PHEV ITS car still uses a manual steering system, which is considered uncomfortable because the driver needs to exert significant effort to control the steering, leading to driver fatigue and difficulty in controlling the vehicle when using a manual steering system. To achieve better driving comfort, the PHEV ITS car requires an electric-based steering system, namely Electric Power Steering (EPS). EPS is a steering system assisted by an electric motor to move the steering wheel. At low speeds, EPS functions to lighten the steering for easier maneuverability and is used to increase steering resistance to assist in stabilizing the vehicle (Vehicle Stability). Based on the above issues, testing is needed before installing EPS on the PHEV ITS car to determine its efficiency, performance, and impact in using EPS, which will be applied to the PHEV ITS car. The testing is conducted by simulating on a testing device that measures steering angles, steering torque, EPS assist torque, DC motor current, and vehicle speed. The results of the testing will determine whether EPS has good efficiency, performance, and meets the driver's comfort standards. The testing method involves designing a simulator to test EPS by applying a load to turn the steering, which is then converted into steering torque, while varying the vehicle speed from 0 km/h to 100 km/h with different rack loads ranging from 0kg to 20kg. The results of the testing will identify the testing method for EPS, thereby understanding the performance of the steering system in the PHEV ITS car. The testing will also determine the magnitude of EPS assist torque and DC motor current at different speeds and rack loads.
