Abstract

Light is an important ecological factor for marine organisms, including fish. Light can be captured through photosensory in the fisheye organs, then processed in the brain as information to stimulate movement and behavior. The response of fish to light is known as phototaxis where phototaxis is influenced by the age and maturity of the gonads. At this time many lamp-based fishing methods are developed to produce light that can stimulate fish behavior to move closer to fishing gear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of LED light on the composition and sexual maturity of fish caught in Paciran Village, Lamongan Regency. This study used four lamp treatments, one lamp as a control, namely existing lights (LE) which are white, three types of LED lamps, namely LHU (underwater green light) with a lamp depth of 3 meters from sea level, LHS (surface green light), and LHUS (underwater and surface green light). Total body length measurements were measured at least 30 individuals in each species and then compared with the size of the first gonadal maturity (Lm). The results showed that the lamp treatment that had the highest number of catches was LHU (472 individuals). The species caught consist of 12 species that belong to the group of pelagic fish of economic value. Most species are distributed throughout the treatment. The most widely caught species are R. brachysoma and R. kanagurta, followed by T. ilisha, G. minuta, S. lemuru, S. leptolepis, S. jello, S. fimbriata, H. kelee, E. thoracata, T. lepturus, and S. crumenophthalmus. The entire species is attracted to and close to the light source (positive phototaxis) due to the availability of food near the light source. Most of the total body length of the catch is smaller than the size of the first mature gonads (Lm). LHU and LHS treatments are able to attract more mature fish (≥Lm) than LE and LHUS treatments.
