Abstract

Derawan Island, which is located in remote areas of East Kalimantan, faces challenges in accessing electricity due to a lack of availability of electricity supplies. To overcome this problem, the optimal solution is to utilize the potential of renewable energy sources in the local area. Currently the power plants on Derawan Island consist of 5 Diesel Generators (DG), Photovoltaic (PV) systems, and Lead Acid Batteries. This study aims to optimize the integration of PV and Wind Turbine technologies into hybrid power plants, as well as energy storage using Li-Ion Batteries (LI) and Flywheel (FW). Optimization and simulation are carried out using HOMER Pro Software by collecting various data such as annual load, solar radiation and wind speed on Derawan Island. There are 4 scenarios analyzed, namely: 2DG/PV/LI, 2DG/PV/LI/FW, 1DG/PV/LI/ WT and 1DG/PV/LI/WT/FW. Optimal results show that only one DG is needed with the DG/PV/LI/WT configuration. Scenario 3 produces a Net Present Cost (NPC) of $5,69 millions, Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) $ 0,152/kWh, emission CO 962 kg/yr, UHC 37,3 kg/yr, PM 37,3 kg/yr, SO2 2.221, NOx 6.438. This scenario provides a lower contribution to air pollution and negative impact on the environment. The analysis results show that the addition of Flywheel as energy storage has a higher initial investment and O&M cost compared to Li-Ion Batteries.
