Abstract

The construction of the Suramadu Bridge caused rapid changes in social, economic and cultural order. This also has an impact on the order of Madurese settlements in the Suramadu Bridge Foot Area, especially those that apply the Taneyan Lanjhang architectural pattern. This research analyzes the shift in the concept of Taneyan Lanjhang architecture due to changes in residents' domestic activities. Changes in domestic activities as one of the aspects that shape culture need to be accommodated in the house. Therefore, a detailed observation of the adaptations applied to the Taneyan Lanjhang concept needs to be done to ensure its architectural sustainability. The theory used to analyze the use of domestic activity space is adaptation theory, by looking at aspects of adaptation mechanisms and influencing factors. This research used a phenomenological qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, in-depth interviews, sketches, and audio and photo documentation. Furthermore, thematic analysis was conducted to formulate the patterns of Taneyan Lanjhang found in the field. The results showed that the adaptation of Taneyan Lanjhang patterns caused by domestic activities can occur in several spaces such as rooms, kitchens, taneyan, and cages. In addition, the economic motive factor is the main determinant in adaptation when compared to other factors such as function building and quality of building.
