Abstract

Centrifugal pumps are critical components in the transfer of fluids across a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. The pump itself is one of the most widely used fluid machines. While all centrifugal pumps are designed to operate optimally at specific flow levels, heads and speeds, their performance can be greatly reduced when operating under off-design conditions. This leads to reduced efficiency and increased energy consumption, making off-design modification of centrifugal pumps an important area of research. The rotating speed (RPM) of a centrifugal pump plays an important role in determining its performance characteristics. An increase in rotational speed increases the flow rate and pressure generated by the pump, but also increases power consumption or decreases efficiency at certain operational points. Off-design simulation of centrifugal pumps is a complex problem involving several factors, such as pump geometry, fluid properties, and rotational speed. Pump performance under these conditions can be predicted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, which can provide a detailed understanding of flow phenomena in pumps. This numerical study uses a pump geometry based on three previous studies by A. Meakhail, Abo Elyamin et al., and Damanik & Waluyo with FLUENT software to review the fluid flow phenomena that occur as well as head and efficiency at variations of off-design operating flowrate and rotation speed of the pump under study. The results show that flowrate variations below the best efficiency show an increase in vortex intensity at increasingly smaller capacities. Meanwhile, the headloss at increased capacity is predominantly due to friction losses. The points taken according to the opening according to Affinity Law at different rotation speeds show similar behavior and efficiency values.
