Abstract

Microplastics are plastic particles that are <5 mm in size. Microplastics in fish are known to be detected in several organs such as gills, gastrointestinal tract and fish flesh. In this study, torpedo scad fish (Megalaspis cordyla) were used as carnivores and 10 shortfin scad fish (Decapterus macrosoma) were omnivorous and economically important pelagic fish. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the physical and chemical characteristics of microplastics in the gills, gastrointestinal tract and fish flesh with different eating habits. Observation of the physical characteristics of microplastics includes shape, color, and size as well as chemical (polymer) characteristics. The results of the accumulation of microplastics of 10 torpedo scad fish (carnivores) in the gill organs were 80,78 particles/gram, in the gastrointestinal tract as many as 95,22 particles/gram, and in the flesh as many as 33,45 particles/gram. The most dominant form in this sample is fragment (1325 particles) and the dominant color is black. In 10 shortfin scad fish (omnivorous), there were 109,92 particles/gram in the gill organs, 113,09 particles/gram in the gastrointestinal tract, and 32,08 particles/gram in the flesh. The most dominant form in this sample is fragment (1624 particles) and the dominant color is black. The results of the size of microplastics in the torpedo scad fish were dominated in the range of 20-40 μm and in the shortfin scad fish in the range of 0-20 μm. The polymers obtained in the samples of the two fish tested based on the dominant color forms were Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and Polyamide (Nylon). Based on the Independent T-Test with a sig. = 0.161 (p>0.05) this result shows that there is no difference between the abundance of microplastics related to feeding habbit in the torpedo scad fish and shortfin scad fish.
