Abstract

Biodiesel has various advantages as an alternative fuel. However, it still has several disadvantages, one of which is related to its oxidative stability. This study was conducted to analyze the influence of adding natural antioxidant curcumin and synthetic antioxidant pyrogallol on the oxidative stability of B50 biodiesel and its impact on diesel engine performance. In terms of the oxidative stability indicator, the results showed random fluctuations, indicating that the addition of antioxidants did not significantly affect the oxidative stability of B50 biodiesel. However, in terms of engine performance, the mixture of pyrogallol and curcumin demonstrated relatively better performance during an 8-week storage period. At week 4, B50 biodiesel with the mixture of pyrogallol (PY) and curcumin exhibited higher average power and torque compared to pure B50 biodiesel, with values of 2.670 kW and 14.815 Nm, respectively. By week 8, the B50 biodiesel with the mixture of pyrogallol (PY) and curcumin showed even higher average power and torque compared to pure B50 biodiesel, with values of 2.684 kW and 14.94 Nm, respectively. Regarding Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC), pure B50 biodiesel demonstrated better SFOC values at week 0 and week 4 of storage. However, at week 8, the B50 biodiesel with the mixture of pyrogallol (PY) and curcumin exhibited better SFOC values than pure B50 biodiesel. The mixture of pyrogallol (PY) and curcumin resulted in an average SFOC of 347.653 g/kWh, while pure B50 biodiesel had an average SFOC of 352.488 g/kWh.
