Abstract

Apartment buildings with residential units close to each other cause openings to only be located on one side of the building, so that the level of room lighting is poor and uneven. On the other hand, the function of flats, which serve not only as a residence but also as a place to work and study, requires lighting that meets activity standards. The use of lights will increase energy consumption during the day. The strategy to improve the performance of natural lighting can be done by designing a horizontal louvre-type shading device that can allow light to enter the room according to the angle of the sun's altitude in a humid tropical climate through slat geometry. This research was conducted to analyze the role of slat geometry and rotation angle on the performance of natural lighting in the room. The role of the horizontal louvre on the performance of natural lighting can be identified through an experimental research strategy using mock-up media for typical residential units of type 24 as a representation of simple flats that are widely built in the city of Surabaya.
The focus of this research is to find the most optimal louvre horizontal slat geometry applied in a humid tropical climate. A daylight factor analysis was carried out to determine the percentage of sunlight entering the room. Field measurements were carried out from the end of February to early April, with the mock-up at the 3rd floor height. The results of this study show that the role in improving indoor lighting performance throughout the day is in slat geometry 2 (two) with a 30° rotation angle, and the role in reducing lighting levels is found in all 0° and 45° turn geometries throughout the day. There are five factors that influence this role, namely the length of the reflecting plane, the width of the slat, the open gap, the slat opening, and the cross-sectional area of the reflection, with the most significant factors being the slat opening, the slope of the reflecting plane, and the open gap. The role of slat geometry has the potential to be well applied in humid tropical climates to fixed horizontal louvers using slat geometry at 2 angles of 30° and to movable horizontal louvres using slat geometry at 3 angles of 30° in the morning and evening, angles of 45° during the day to increase lighting, and angles of 30° during the day to reduce overexposure.
