Abstract

In public housing, occupants tend to make direct contact with floors and walls to cool their bodies. Such conductive behavior is carried out for thermal comfort. Because of this, the behavior is referred to as contact cooling. Previous research was dominated by studies related to the effect of adaptive behavior towards the floor for thermal comfort, as well as the effect of material properties of floors and walls on thermal comfort. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between occupant adaptive behavior through direct contact with floors and walls for thermal comfort, as well as the concept and role of contact cooling in naturally ventilated public housing in Surabaya.
The research employs quantitative and qualitative approaches with combined strategies: mixed method, namely correlation and qualitative strategies. Data collection was carried out through observation, physical environment measurement, thermal
comfort questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with more than thirty occupants in five naturally ventilated public housing. Quantitative data analysis was performed by
simple linear correlation analysis. While qualitative data analysis was carried out by content analysis.
The results showed that occupants’ adaptive behavior through direct contact with floors and walls for thermal comfort tends to respond to Mean Radiant Temperature (MRT), air and globe temperature, and air velocity compared to air humidity. So contact cooling behavior tends to occur when the MRT, air, and globe temperature are higher, and air velocity is lower. From the occupants’ perspective, the contact cooling strategy
tends to occur when the body surface area that is thermally sensitive contact with the floor and walls is larger. While from an architectural perspective, the contact cooling strategy tends to occur in room with floor height, position, and orientation with minimal exposure to solar radiation and adequate air velocity. Therefore, contact cooling plays a role in response to increases in increases in MRT and Standard Effective Temperature (SET) in a thermally uncomfortable room.
