Abstract

Mangrove forests are one of the main types of ecosystems that grow in natural wetlands along tropical and subtropical coasts, and play an important role in estuary ecosystems. Around the mangrove forest on the Kalimireng River, Gresik there are various anthropogenic pressures, such as deforestation, conversion of mangrove forests into fish and salt ponds, and industrial activity. The existence of this anthropogenic threat can reduce the quality and quantity of mangrove forests which can affect the role of mangrove forest functions. This research uses vegetation analysis and remote sensing methods via Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Analysis to determine the density and health of mangrove species in the field uses vegetation analysis and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm. Based on the research results, 17 mangrove species were found and dominated by Avicennia marina, which had a very dense density (2325 ind/ha) with a basal area value of 10.83 m2/ha. The results of the classification of the health of mangrove forests are based on the NDVI value of the area of the study area of 116.4 ha, the health level of the mangroves is at normal to good health levels with an area of 12.2 ha and 12.43 ha respectively. The NDVI image correlation coefficient with the density of vegetation in the field is 0.75 which indicates a strong correlation.
