Abstract

The rising trend toward suburbanization and sprawl has been the main topic of urban development throughout the past century due to its negative impact on the environment. Research has shown that suburbanization and urban sprawl was facilitated or made possible by the invention of personal internal combustion engine vehicle and decreasing transportation cost. Research also suggests that transport technology is one of the primary forces that shape architecture and cities. This begs the question, what if there is a new transport system? then should there not be a new form of city? How will affect architecture? This design proposal aims to provide a visual representation of potential future possibilities in the advent of new transport system-air mobility. This visual representation is aimed to create new opportunities and spark new ideas that can address the existing suburbanization and urban sprawl problems in the field of design. Based on the review of the literature on inventing future cities, a speculative design is used to portray the future context of the design proposal. Then, the design is experimented in that context. The speculation of the context is focused on transport technology that will be available in the future and how it will affect the city. Multimodal transportation hubs are used as the typology for the experimented architecture to facilitate the application of new transport technology. The design portrays the influence of air mobility on several aspects: circulation both for users and transport system, therefore affecting the spatial organizations, which should be accommodated by the structure, hence dictating the building form. The building responds to the integration of air mobility by first adjusting to the 3-dimensional movement of the air mobility, arranges the spaces according to the circulation, and explore structural system to accommodates the arrangement of spaces. The final form shows that the building has high degree of openness and multiple entry way to the building, that results in unique form with organic aesthetic.

Tren yang meningkat menuju suburbanisasi dan penyebaran telah menjadi topik utama pembangunan perkotaan sepanjang abad terakhir karena dampak negatifnya terhadap lingkungan. Penelitian telah menunjukkan bahwa suburbanisasi dan urban sprawl difasilitasi atau dimungkinkan oleh penemuan kendaraan mesin pembakaran internal pribadi dan mengurangi biaya transportasi. Penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa teknologi transportasi adalah salah satu kekuatan utama yang membentuk arsitektur dan kota. Ini menimbulkan pertanyaan, bagaimana jika ada sistem transportasi baru? Lalu bukankah seharusnya ada bentuk kota baru? Bagaimana pengaruhnya terhadap arsitektur? Proposal desain ini bertujuan untuk memberikan representasi visual dari kemungkinan potensial di masa depan dalam munculnya sistem transportasi baru-mobilitas udara. Representasi visual ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan peluang baru dan memicu ide-ide baru yang dapat mengatasi masalah suburbanisasi dan urban sprawl yang ada di bidang desain. Berdasarkan tinjauan literatur tentang menciptakan kota masa depan, desain spekulatif digunakan untuk menggambarkan konteks masa depan dari proposal desain. Kemudian, desain bereksperimen dalam konteks itu. Spekulasi konteks difokuskan pada teknologi kendaraan terbang yang akan tersedia di masa depan dan bagaimana hal itu akan mempengaruhi kota. Hub transportasi digunakan sebagai tipologi untuk arsitektur yang bereksperimen untuk memfasilitasi penerapan teknologi transportasi baru. Desain menggambarkan pengaruh mobilitas udara pada beberapa aspek: sirkulasi baik untuk pengguna dan sistem transportasi, sehingga mempengaruhi organisasi spasial, yang harus ditampung oleh struktur, sehingga menentukan bentuk. Bentuk akhir menunjukkan bahwa bangunan memiliki tingkat keterbukaan yang tinggi dan beberapa jalan masuk ke bangunan, yang menghasilkan bentuk unik dengan estetika organik.
