Abstract

Coral reefs have a function as a spawning ground, nursery ground and feeding ground for fish; therefore, damage to coral reefs will make it difficult to breed and will move to find new habitats. One particular method that is currently commonly used to protect and enhance reef fish resources is through the construction and placement of fish apartments (FA), for example in the south coast of Pagerungan Besar island, Sapeken District, Sumenep Regency in November 2020. Monitoring of the existence of FA needs to be carried out to determine the effectiveness of the artificial ecosystem as a provider of fish resource stocks. Fish observation was carried out using a modified Underwater Visual Census (UVC) technique in June 2021, October 2021, June 2022 and November 2022. Observed variables were species richness and fish abundance. Certain environmental variables were also measured, including temperature, salinity, lucidity, level of DO and current velocity. Based on the observations, the species richness, abundance and value of diversity index tend to increase in each periods showing that the presence of FA is successfully acts as a new habitat and able to increase the fish stocks according to the objectives of this study, and fish stocks increase according to the purpose of this study with a density value (300m2) reaching 200. As for indicator group, the abundance was somewhat similar among species. Major groups always dominate the community, with dominant species such as Chromis viridis, Apogon spp, Thalassoma lunare, Aeoliscus strigatus and Mulloidichthys vanicolensis. For the target group, dominant species including Ctenochaetus striatus dan Scarus rivulatus.
