Abstract

Plankton support marine life in many different ways, by photosynthesizing and becoming the primary food source for many fish species and other marine life. However, there is very little marine information regarding plankton abundance and it is not evenly distributed in Indonesia, especially in Flores waters. The main objective of this study is to understand the horizontal distribution of plankton abundance and how plankton density affects whale migration routes. Data were collected during the Jala Citra 3 expedition conducted by the Indonesian Navy's Hydro-Oceanographic Center. The instrument used in this study was a Kongsberg EM302 multibeam echosounder operating at a frequency of 30kHz that collected bathymetry and water column data. This study compared the Volume Backscattering Strength (SV) value obtained through echosounder recording with the observed zooplankton behavior. It was found that the Flores Sea has diverse physical and biological conditions. The varying depths in the two survey lines ranging from 83.844 meters to 4,741.374 meters significantly affected the sea and the horizontal distribution of plankton. Marine life such as fish and plankton are more abundant in shallower water areas such as the Alor Strait. The abundance of plankton and other organisms such as krill and small fish affects the migratory routes of whales coming from Australian waters to the Banda Sea.
