Abstract

The mud deposits on Sidoarjo mud vulcano which have accumulated for 17 years since its first eruption in 2006 have potential as research material, one of which is regarding the characteristics of the mud deposits and the potential of critical raw minerals (CRM’s) contained within it. The focus of this research is to identify the characteristics of the LUSI mud deposits based on magnetic and mineralogical parameter values and to determine the CRM’s content in the LUSI samples and their distribution. The methods used are the measurement of magnetic susceptibility, XRD, and ICP-MS then performed Pearson correlation to find the relationship between parameters. The results of the χLF value of mud deposits have a range (0,14 - 1,55)×10-6 m3/kg and are dominated by moderate χFD values (2-10%) shows that the source of the magnetic particles is assumed to originate from the pedogenesis process of sedimentary rocks with detected minerals indicating that the mud deposits originate from the Upper Kalibeng Formation which was formed in marine depositional environment. The CRM’s content detected are Dysporsium (average 4.07 ppm), Neodymium (average 25.13 ppm), Praseodymium (average 6.39 ppm), Scandium (average 17.79 ppm), Samarium (average 5.18 ppm), and Ytterbium (average 16.61 ppm). Overall, the distribution pattern of magnetic susceptibility values and CRM’s appears to be independent of each other with variations in depth caused by manipulation of mud flow by the PPLS. In addition, result value of the correlation is ≤ 4 show a relatively weak relationship between magnetic susceptibility values and measured geochemical parameters.
