Abstract

The planning of spillway structures requires consideration of several aspects, such as hydrology and hydraulics, to design the form and type of the spillway structure. Geological and geotechnical aspects are also essential in determining the location of the spillway structure. Ensuring the safety of the spillway structure during its operation necessitates both hydraulic and stability planning. These two aspects are closely related and inseparable. If a spillway structure only meets one of these criteria, a reassessment of the design is necessary. The hydraulic conditions of the spillway structure must be checked to understand the flow behavior and requirements for each component, such as flow velocity, water level, Froude number, cavitation analysis, flow vibration, cross flow, and local scour. Meanwhile, the stability of the spillway structure needs to be evaluated, considering stability against sliding, overturning, seepage, and eccentricity. In this case, the hydraulic and stability analyses of the spillway structure at the Jlantah dam showed that the existing condition of the spillway structure meets the stability criteria (stability against seepage, sliding, overturning, and eccentricity). However, in terms of hydraulic considerations, the transitional channel did not meet the criteria due to cross flow. Therefore, an alternative design is needed to address this issue. The alternative design involves increasing the contraction angle of the transitional channel from the previous 16.717° to 12.5°. The analysis of the alternative transitional channel showed that it is now safe against cross flow. On the other hand, the guide channel, spillway, launch channel, stilling basin, escape channel, and river all meet the criteria for hydraulic assessment.
