Abstract

Utilization of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) in lithium batteries can help overcome various safety issues arising from the use of conventional liquid electrolytes. With its potential, the use of SPE is still constrained by low ion conductivity at room temperature. In this study, Chitosan - PEO polymer blend was used as the host polymer, LiClO4 was used as the lithium ion source. Al2O3 was added as filler to determine its effect on the ion conductivity of SPE. The SPE film was produced by solution casting method. In this study, the precursor material was dissolved in 1% acetic acid. Then Al2O3 nanofiller was added with the weight percentage of Al2O3 is 3%, 5%, 7% of the total mass of pure SPE. Ion conductivity of SPE was measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), changes in material crystallinity were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), material surface morphology by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) to observe functional groups in the material. The results of this study showed the addition of Al2O3 nanofillers to SPE up to 5% variation, giving an increase in ion conductivity where at 7% variation the ion conductivity of SPE decreased. The most likely mechanism for increasing ion conductivity is the interaction of the Lewis acid base surface group of Al2O3 reacting with the polymer helps the dissociation of salts and provides a new pathway for cation transportation. FTIR tests proved the presence of functional groups of the constituent materials and SEM results showed homogeneity of both polymers
