Abstract

Turbin angin Savonius merupakan turbin angin jenis Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) yang paling cocok untuk diterapkan di Indonesia. Selain karena konstruksinya yang sederhana dan low cost, turbin Savonius ini mampu menerima angin dari segala arah dan mampu beroperasi pada kecepatan putaran rendah. Namun dibalik kelebihannya, turbin angin Savonius memiliki kelemahan yaitu efisiensi yang dihasilkan lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan turbin angin jenis lainnya. Oleh karena itu dilakukan penelitian untuk mendapatkan desain turbin dengan efisiensi yang optimal. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menambahkan silinder sirkuler atau ellips di samping sudu advancing.
Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode numerik menggunakan software ANSYS 2021 R2. Metode tersebut dibagi menjadi tiga tahapan, yaitu pre-processing, processing, dan post processing. Penelitian ini menggunakan model berupa geometri 2 dimensi. Mesh yang digunakan memiliki jumlah elemen 170.000 yang telah melalui grid independence test yang dilakukan dengan mengevaluasi hasil nilai Cm yang didapat pada putaran ke 7 dengan TSR sebesar 0,8. Sedangkan parameter yang memiliki nilai tetap pada penelitian ini yaitu Y/D sebesar 0,5 dan kecepatan aliran yaitu 5 m/s.
Penambahan silinder atau elips di samping sudu advancing dilakukan untuk menimbulkan efek nozzle pada aliran. Silinder atau elips yang diletakkan di samping sudu advancing divariasikan bentuk silindernya (Y/X) pada 1/8; 1/4; 1/2; dan 1 serta jarak antara pusat turbin angin dan pusat silinder terhadap diameter tubin (T/D) pada 1,27; 1,50; 1,82; dan 2,12. Performa terbaik terjadi ketika turbin menggunakan elips dengan Y/X 1/2 pada jarak T/D 1,82 dan 2,12 yang meningkatkan performa sebesar 3% pada TSR 0,7. Sedangkan performa paling buruk terjadi ketika Y/X 1/8 serta jarak T/D < 1,50. Pemasangan silinder sirkular atau elips yang diletakkan pada jarak < 1,50 kurang efektif dalam meningkatkan performa turbin karena kinerjanya masih kurang dari turbin konvensional.

The Savonius wind turbine is considered the most suitable type of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) for implementation in Indonesia. Apart from its simple and low-cost construction, the Savonius turbine is capable of capturing wind from all directions and can operate at low rotational speeds. However, despite its advantages, the Savonius wind turbine suffers from lower efficiency compared to other types of wind turbines. Hence, research is conducted to achieve a turbine design with optimal efficiency. This study involves the addition of circular or elliptical cylinders beside the advancing blades.
This research employs a numerical method using ANSYS 2021 R2 software, divided into three stages: pre-processing, processing, and post-processing. This research utilizes a 2-dimensional geometry model. The mesh employed consists of 170,000 elements, and it has undergone a grid independence test, which was conducted by evaluating the Cm values obtained at the 7th rotation with a TSR of 0.8. Meanwhile, the parameters that remain constant in this study are Y/D at 0.5 and the flow velocity at 5 m/s.
The addition of cylinders or ellipses beside the advancing blades is aimed at inducing a nozzle effect on the flow. The cylinders or ellipses placed beside the advancing blades vary in cylindrical shape (Y/X) at 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1, as well as the distance between the center of the wind turbine and the center of the cylinder relative to the turbine diameter (T/D) at 1.27, 1.50, 1.82, and 2.12. The best performance occurs when the turbine using an ellipse with Y/X of 1/2 at T/D distances of 1.82 and 2.12, resulting in a 3% performance increase at a TSR of 0.7. On the other hand, the worst performance occurs when Y/X is 1/8 and the T/D distance is less than 1.50. The installation of circular or elliptical cylinders placed at a distance less than 1.50 is less effective in improving turbine performance because their performance is still lower than that of conventional turbines.
