Abstract

Dams are structures that utilize soil as a construction material. In zoned embankment dams, there is a impermeable layer that serves as a barrier against seepage. Typically, clay soil is used for this layer. However, some clay soils used in this layer exhibit dispersive properties, making them susceptible to erosion and containing high levels of sodium ions. The high sodium content in the soil's pore water causes the soil particles to repel each other, leading to soil failure. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of adding fly ash on soil dispersivity. The research methodology involves laboratory observations, including testing for dispersivity, physical properties, and mechanical behavior. Testing is conducted on natural soil and soil stabilized with fly ash at concentrations of 3%, 5%, 8%, 10%, and 12%. The results indicate that a 3% fly ash content with a 7-day soaking period yields the highest values for maximum dry unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, and the lowest coefficient of permeability. Double hydrometer and crumb tests confirm the effectiveness of a 3% fly ash content with a 7-day soaking period in reducing soil dispersivity below 30%, classifying it as non-dispersive soil. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the optimal fly ash content to reduce soil dispersivity is 3% with a 7-day soaking period.
