Abstract

The transformation of maintenance on container ships is required in the maintenance management strategy by shipping companies. As the complexity and operational demands increase, the maintenance of container ships becomes an increasingly important challenge. This thesis focuses on the idea that condition repairs and maintenance have a significant impact on the operational efficiency and maintenance costs of container ships. In this study, the author considers various technical aspects of ship maintenance strategies. These aspects involve various factors ranging from the selection of maintenance methods, and decisions on the use of spare parts, to routine scheduling for maintenance. The primary focus of this research is on the main engine, a vital part of the container ship, where it was found that 70.6% of the equipment required a shift to predictive maintenance strategies. In addition, this study found that 62.5% of the equipment on the auxiliary engine also required the same transformation. This research also outlines various common sources of damage on container ships, including those caused by overuse, clogging, and sticking (causing equipment to stick or stop). Knowledge of these common types of damage is important for shipping companies in designing and implementing effective maintenance strategies. Finally, this study offers valuable insights into the initial steps that shipping companies should take in their maintenance strategy transformation. These findings enable these companies to design and implement a framework to transition from preventive maintenance methods to predictive maintenance strategies.
