Abstract

The novel 'Sophie's World' by Jostein Gaarder offers great potential to become a medium for introducing western philosophical concepts packaged in the form of an interesting fictional story. Especially for those who are new to philosophy, this novel can be a gateway that inspires their interest in learning more. Therefore, an innovative design solution was needed to adapt the story of 'Sophie's World' into a popular medium, such as a graphic novel. The novel 'Sophie's World' has great potential if it is adapted into visual communication design media, because there are many distinctive symbolisms and depictions of stories that can be conveyed more effectively with the support of illustrations. In this design, interesting storytelling techniques and visual elements will be used to reach ordinary readers who are interested in studying philosophy. The research methods that will be used include literature studies on transmedia storytelling theory, the foolscap method, visual communication design theory, especially in the making of graphic novels, as well as an analysis of the storytelling elements of the novel 'Sophie's World'. In addition, this research will also involve surveys and interviews with potential readers, especially the younger generation, to gain a deeper understanding of their needs and preferences for this novel adaptation. It is hoped that the results of this research can contribute to the development of reading sources that can raise awareness of the importance of a "sense of wonder" (curiosity) in society, through attractive and easily accessible media. By expanding philosophical literacy through adapted graphic novel designs, it is hoped that interest in and understanding of the concept of critical thinking can increase, help readers to think logically, and stimulate broader intellectual discussion on philosophical issues in everyday life.
