Abstract

Biomarker analysis of GL-04 coal sample from Tanjung Formation, Barito Basin, Central Kalimantan was carried out by extraction, fractionation and identification used combination method of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine its organic geochemical characteristics. The results show that n-alkanes with a unimodal distribution indicated source of organic matter were dominated by terrestrial plants with little contribution from algae and bacteria. The predominance of odd carbon chain over even carbon chain, especially maximum abundance at n-C29 indicates low maturity with high biodegradation rate. This result is evidenced by the value of CPI > 1; OEP-2 > OEP-1; CPI S/L < 1, waxiness index > 2; LMW/HMW < 1; TAR >1; Paq < 0.4; AI < 0.5; ACL < 30; NAR ~ 0; and 8β(H)-homodrimane/8β(H)-drimane ratio > 1. The presence of less stable isomers such as 17β(H)-22,29,30-trisnorhopana (βTm) and 4,4,8,9,9-pentamethyldecalin also proves this indication. Pr/Ph ratio > 10.3; C32/C31 hopane < 0.8; and the Pr/n-C17 versus Ph/n-C18 crossplot show indicators of terrestrial depositional environment in oxic conditions with low maturity. Biomarker analysis as a whole shows that GL-04 coal is humic coal that belongs to type-III kerogen which leads to the formation of gas (gas-prone) so it has the potential as a source of Coalbed Methane (CBM).
