Abstract

Block lifting is a crucial operation in various industries, including construction and maritime. Eye pads play a vital role in providing secure attachment points for lifting and transporting heavy loads. This study focuses on the analysis of eye pads during the block lifting process using finite element analysis. The objective is to evaluate the stress distribution and deformation characteristics of different eye pad variations. The research methodology involves creating 3D models of the block and eye pads in a finite element software and applying appropriate boundary conditions. Several variations are considered, including different shapes (rectangular, round, and triangular), sizes, and quantities of eye pads. The models are subjected to simulated lifting forces and their corresponding stress and deformation responses are analyzed. The results reveal varying stress and deformation patterns among the different eye pad variations. The rectangular eye pad shape exhibits higher stress concentrations at the edges, while the round and triangular shapes distribute stress more evenly. Increasing the size and number of eye pads generally leads to reduced stress and deformation. The study establishes that certain eye pad variations meet the required yield strength criteria 235 MPa, while others exceed the permissible stress limits. From the analysis results of all variations, the models that comply with the yield strength of the material are the 8 eye pad model in triangle shape with size 300x20 mm, which has a stress of 207.17 MPa and a deformation of 1.6642 mm; the 12 eye pad model in triangle shape with size 300x15 mm, which has a stress of 183.85 MPa and a deformation of 1.5815 mm; and the 12 eye pad model in triangle shape with size 300x20 mm, which has a stress of 141.94 MPa and a deformation of 1.5714 mm.
