Abstract

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals target encourages various organizations or companies in the world to compete to make changes or implement efforts that support sustainability. In order to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the target of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, in 2022, PT.TAM SPLD designed a program for implementing reverse logistics for cardboard packaging of oil products, where cardboard packaging is also the fourth largest contributor to producing the amount of waste in Indonesia in in 2022. This study will evaluate the environmental impact and costs of packaging take-back activities, by building several scenarios, namely the use of disposable cardboard boxes, reusable cardboard boxes and reusable plastic crates. The environmental impact assessment of each scenario was carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method with SimaPro 9.0 software and the Ecoinvent database, with the scope of Gate to Grave. From the results of emission and cost calculations, it is found that scenarios 1, 2 and 4, namely using cardboard boxes that can be reused 100% and 80% and plastic crates that can be reused with a total reuse of 100%, because they can produce emission reductions of more than 30% CO2 in 2030, with scenario 4 producing the largest emission reduction of around 98%. However, the use of cardboard packaging into plastic crates required major changes due to the replacement of packing machines and the addition of warehouses. Therefore, for the long term, it is recommended to change cardboard packaging to plastic crates, and for the short term, it is possible to reuse cardboard by reusing 100% or 80%, because it produces reduced emissions according to the target and still produces the remaining increase in profits. In implementing this reusable packaging scenario, several things need to be considered, such as providing SOPs for the process of storing used packaging, printing double batch code production numbers on used packaging, using investment in new packaging machines, and packaging design.
