Abstract

Air is very important for human life, without air humans will not be able to live, therefore the air should not be polluted with harmful gases that can interfere with human health. some of these harmful gases are contained in the exhaust gas from the engine used for daily life, especially in the engine room which can be classified as a closed space based on government and OSHA which has certain restrictions before endangering the health and safety of the ship's crew. Therefore, a tool is needed to detect existing exhaust gases with a portable and inexpensive tool. Some of the exhaust gases that will be detected in this tool are CO and CO2. Detection will be used using MQ 135 and MQ 7 sensors which will be monitored using an LCD screen which will be tested in the engine room. The experiment was carried out by conducting experiments on a laboratory scale in the generator room at shipping engineering, ten nopember institute of technology. The generator room has an average ppm result for CO2 in the form of 413.61 PPM and CO in the form of 8.31 PPM when the engine is turned off and while the data obtained on the generator engine that is turned on CO2 is 560.64 PPM while CO is 9.15 which is still far from the threshold that has been determined from IMO and OSHA. Therefore, the results of the test have concluded that the tool can detect differences when the generator engine is on and not on and is still within the threshold of human health.
