Abstract

Global warming is an event of an increase in the average temperature of the atmosphere, sea and land on earth which is affected by greenhouse gases (GHG), mainly carbon dioxide (CO2). One of the mitigations for an increase in GHG is by providing vegetated areas, for example mangrove forest ecosystems. Mangroves have great potential as carbon storage forests and can be used as a mitigation effort in dealing with climate change as Blue Carbon. The mangrove forest area on the Kalimireng River, Gresik, has many industrial activities. This produces waste and pollution which can increase carbon emissions around the Kalimireng River. Estimation of carbon stocks can be carried out through an approach with remote sensing technology, namely by utilizing Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Based on the results of the study, the total species density of station 1 (2.383,33 ind/ha) and the total species density of station 2 (2.200 ind/ha) were classified as good. The highest estimated carbon stock based on field measurements was at KL 2.1.2 (148,56 tons/ha) and the lowest was at KL 2.2.2 (14,52 tons/ha). Meanwhile, the total carbon stock is 1.069,32 tons/ha. The carbon stock of the images is analyzed using the NDVI value. Estimation of carbon stocks based on the highest NDVI value is found in KL 2.1.3 (139,77 tons/ha) and the lowest is in KL 2.2.3 (58,51 tons/ha). Meanwhile, the total carbon stock is 1.069,33 tons/ha. The correlation coefficient between field carbon stocks and Sentinel-2 NDVI imagery is 0,44 with a sufficient level of correlation and an RMSE validation value of 41,11 tons/ha. The distribution of the estimated carbon stock of the mangrove forest ecosystem in the Kalimireng River, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, is divided into 4 classes, namely 7,92 - 53,91 tons/ha (NDVI value between 0,4 – 0,49), 53,91 – 76,91 tons/ha (NDVI value between 0,49 – 0,52), 76,91 – 107,57 tons/ha (NDVI value between 0,52 – 0,56), and 107,57 – 144,75 tons/ha (NDVI value between 0,56 – 0,6085).
