Abstract
Protection systems are systems that utilize relays as one of their operating devices. Overcurrent relays are the most commonly used relays for protection against overcurrent or short-circuit faults. These protection devices are widely applied in large-scale industries, including the Moramo 2x50 MW Coal-fired Power Plant located in Konawe Selatan Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province. The power plant is still in need of improvements, particularly in its electrical protection coordination system, to ensure the reliability of the generation system. Therefore, this research focuses on optimizing the time delay setting (TDS) using several methods for comparison in order to obtain the best TDS value. The methods used for comparison are Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Modified Particle Swarm Optimization (MPSO), and manual calculations. Through this comparison, it was found that MPSO is the optimization method that can achieve the minimum time of operation (top) for the overcurrent relay, while still protecting power components such as induction motors and transformers during faults, while considering the protection constraints of these devices. The algorithm optimization is performed using MATLAB and simulated in the ETAP software program.
