Abstract

Synthesis of lanthanum phosphate (LPH) and lanthanum nickel phosphate (LNPH) catalysts using Hexamethylenetetramin (HMT) templates and variations in moles of Ni (0.025; 0.050; 0.075; 0.100; and 0.150) has been successfully carried out using the sol-gel method. The synthesized solids were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, pyridine adsorption-FTIR, nitrogen adsorption-desorption (N2), and Scanning Electron Microscopy Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). The characterization results show that the LPH and LNPH catalysts have a hexagonal crystal structure. The Lewis and Brønsted acidity of the catalyst increases with the addition of Ni dopant. The morphology of the LPH and LNPH catalysts is granular with a rough surface. The ability of the catalyst was tested on the conversion of cellulose to 5 hydroxy methylfurfural (5-HMF). The highest percentage yield of 5 HMF with cellulose, glucose, and fructose reactants was achieved by each the catalysts LN1PH (49.12%), LN4PH (91.08%), and LN2PH (88.30%). The results of the formation of 5 HMF products are influenced by the character of the acidity, surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of the catalyst. The reaction pathway shows that some 5-HMF products are formed without going through the fructose pathway.
