Abstract

One of the important ecosystems in the intertidal zone is coral reefs which have ecological roles and economic benefits. Due to its position in the transition zone between marine and terrestrial ecosystems, coral reefs have the potential to receive various kinds of negative impacts from the dynamics that occur in these two ecosystems. One of the coral reef ecosystems on the coast of East Java that is thought to be threatened by human activity is in the Pasir Putih Situbondo area which is a tourist location, fishing and other marine biota. This study aimed to determine and compare the density of recruitment rates and the richness of coral recruit genera on two types of natural substrate dead coral and coral rubble in the intertidal zone of Batu Lawang, Pelita Bay and Karang Mayit, Pasir Putih waters, Situbondo. Coral recruits were identified and their densities were calculated having a diameter of <5 cm in a 1x1 m2 square of 5 replications at each location. The average density of coral recruits obtained from dead coral substrates was 13.2 colonies/m2 and coral rubble was 16.5 colonies/m2. The coral recruitment density was categorized as 'very high' (>10 colonies/m2). 20 species of coral recruitment were identified, in Batu Lawang 1 there were 12 species, in Batu Lawang 2 there were 9-11 species, in Pelita Bay there were 6-9 species and in the Karang Mayit location there were 11-12 species. The coral recruitment species that had the highest abundance were Fungia sp, Porites rus, and Porites sp.
