Abstract

Shrimp is one of Indonesia’s prime fishery commodities because of its high selling value and excellent market opportunities. One type of shrimp that is cultivated in Indonesia is the vannamei shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). Feed input in pond cultivation can effect sedimentation of organic matter N (nitrogen) and P (phosphorus) which causes nutrient enrichment. Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) is a phenomenon of an increase in the population of phytoplankton followed by the presence of toxic phytoplankton in waters body so that it can have a negative effect on aquatic organisms, aquaculture organisms, and humans. Therefore, it is necessary to identify species that have the potential to cause Harmful Algae Bloom in vannamei shrimp aquaculture ponds. This research was conducted in the Vannamei Shrimp Bergas Pond, Lombang Village, Batang-Batang District, Sumenep Regency, Madura, East Java. In this study, the method used was morphological identification to detect occurence of potentially harmful microalgae. The results showed the presence of phytoplankton from the classes Bacillariophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae, and Chrysophyceae. Phytoplankton abundance in January and March was included in low category, range 65 - 263 cells/L in January and 88.- 550 cells/L in March. The results of the identification of morphological observations showed that there were Chaetoceros sp. but could not be categorized as harmful Chaetoceros. Chaetoceros sp. still needs to be controlled so that it doesnt become detrimental to the cultivated vaname shrimps.
