Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a high level of biodiversity, including a variety of insect species, one of them is of the Odonata order. Ecologically, dragonflies have an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, which is as a predator. In general, dragonflies of the Odonata order are classified into two suborders, namely Anisoptera (ordinary dragonflies) and Zygoptera (damselflies). The two types of suborder have quite striking differences in the shape of the eyes, wings, body shape and flight behavior. This research is conducted in three different types of habitat, which are gardens, forests and rice fields in the agro-ecosystem area in Jatiarjo village, Prigen, East Java. The purpose of this study is to determine the composition and level of diversity of dragonflies in different habitat types in the agroecosystem area of Jatiarjo Village, Prigen, East Java. The method of observing the diversity of dragonflies in this study used the VES (Visual Encounter Survey) method which was modified with the field by field method (metode jelajah) according to field conditions. The VES method used sweep nets and cameras for documentation to help identify in more detail. During the course of the study, 921 individuals were encountered and identified as 16 species from 2 suborders and 7 families. The forests yielded a highest abundance of 336 individuals from 7 families and 14 species, followed by the ricefields with 305 individuals from 7 families and 13 species, and the lowest abundance being the gardens with 280 individuals from 1 family and 7 species. Pantala flavescens and Orthetrum sabina are two of the most dominating species in all three types of habitats. A species of endemic damselfly, Heliocypha fenestrata was also encountered during the field study. In terms of diversity, the agro-ecosystem area of Jatiarjo village, Prigen was found to be of medium category according to diversity index, with the forests habitat scoring the highest (H’ = 2,32), followed by the rice fields habitat (H’ = 2,08), the lowest being the gardens (H’ = 1,47). In terms of evenness, all three types of habitat scored high, with the highest being the forests habitat (E – 0,88), followed by the ricefields (E = 0,81), and the last being the gardens (E = 0,75). Lastly, all three habitats were of low dominance category according to the dominance index, with the lowest and most stabile being the forests (D = 0,12), compared to the gardens (D = 0,29) and the ricefields (D = 0,18).
