Abstract

As the shipping industry seeks to reduce fuel consumption and mitigate environmental impact, the implementation of slow steaming has gained considerable attention as a potential solution. This study aims to analyze the economical aspect of slow steaming on container ships by assessing its impact on fuel consumption, operational costs, and overall profitability. Therefore, in this final project the three types of slow steaming will be applied to container ships MV MERATUS MEDAN 1. When the ship moves at its designed speed of 17.2 knots (31.85 km/h). The ship travels for 71.5 hours while using a 7390 kW engine. The ship requires 97.23 tons of fuel oil, which costs $ 66,719.54. Fuel oil consumption on ships dropped by 29.4 tons or 30% while employing regular slow steaming, resulting in a $ 20,154.40 save on ship fuel oil. Super slow steaming reduced ship fuel oil consumption by 47.6 tons (49%), cutting ship fuel oil costs by $ 32,059,57. and the additional slow steaming, ship fuel oil consumption was reduced by 64.03 tons, or 66%, resulting in a $ 43,839.93 savings in ship fuel oil expenditures. These slow steaming methods may provide significant cost reductions and economic benefits. Further research and analysis should be conducted to determine if slow steaming is a viable option for MV MERATUS MEDAN 1.
