Abstract

Oil products are one of the essential products in everyday life and vessels play an important role in oil products distribution activities. Transporting oil by ship is not without the risk of accidents during the distribution process. Based on International Maritime Organization investigations it is known that 80% of ship accidents are caused by the human factor. To reduce this risk, international regulations such as the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals, International Safety Management Code, and Standard Training Certificate and Watchkeeping have been developed to ensure the safety of oil tankers and their crews. The purpose of this study is to describe the knowledge of PT. Multi Jaya Samudera oil tanker crew regarding safety regulations on ships, the relationship between age, education level, and length of work, with the knowledge of oil tanker crew regarding safety on board, and provide appropriate solutions. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there was a relationship between age (r = 0.107), education level (r = 0.409), and length of work (r = 0.526) with crew members' knowledge regarding ship safety. There is a significant relationship between education level (p = 0.022) and length of service (p = 0.002) with crew members' knowledge of ship safety. Based on the analysis of the questions, the PT. Multi Jaya Samudera crew had high knowledge regarding SOLAS Chapter II-2 (100% of subjects answering correctly) and the lowest knowledge related to the ISM Code (45.16% of subjects answered correctly). To increase the level of crew knowledge regarding ship safety, it is recommended to carry out regular training for crew members regarding ship safety, especially regarding ISM Code regulations. In addition, it is advisable for crew members with an intermediate level of education to take official studies to obtain a higher level of education. In contrast, for crew members with work experience < 3 years comparative studies related to ship safety and job shadowing can be carried out to improve the description and increase in knowledge.
