Abstract

The Baturaja Carbonate Formation reservoir is one of the targets in the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the South Sumatra Basin. Carbonate reservoirs have a higher level of heterogeneity compared to clastic reservoirs. This poses challenges in formation evaluation due to the dynamic reservoir conditions. Rock typing is believed to be one of the solutions to these challenges. In this study, rock type analysis was conducted using the Pore Geometry Structure (PGS) approach, which is expected to improve the quality of reservoir characterization in the Baturaja Carbonate Formation. The 'KRP' field has core data consisting of routine cores from 8 wells and special cores from 4 wells. Additionally, wireline data from 11 wells were used. Petrophysical analysis was performed to obtain the petrophysical parameter values for each well. Subsequently, PGS curve analysis was conducted as the initial step in the rock typing process. There are 4 rock types in the 'KRP' field, with RT-1 being the best rock type category, exhibiting the highest porosity and permeability values. Furthermore, the PGS method was also used in this study to calculate permeability predictions. Permeability predictions were made using the PGS permeability equation, and after correlating them with core data, a correlation coefficient of 0.963 was obtained, which is better than the correlation coefficient of 0.673 obtained from empirical permeability calculations using core data. Based on the petrophysical parameters and rock typing results, modeling was performed using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method to be applied to wells without core data. The results yielded a representative distribution corresponding to the petrophysical analysis results for each well.
