Abstract

Supplier segmentation is one of the important supply chain-related activity for most firms collaborating with multiple suppliers. Purchasing portfolio matrix (PPM) is a segmentation method that considers two dimensions namely profit impact and supply risk. However, despite its popularity PPM has been the subject of serious criticism because PPM ignores the characteristics of the suppliers and the relationship between the buyer and supplier and somehow makes the formulated strategies inefficient. Therefore, resulting new approach to supplier segmentation, called Supplier Potential Matrix (SPM), aims to fulfil the need for a unifying framework that includes all the important variables under two overarching dimensions namely supplier capabilities and supplier willingness. The main purpose of this study is to segment suppliers using integration of two methods Purchasing Portfolio Matrix (PPM) method and Supplier Potential Matrix (SPM) method as well as defining appropriate
strategy for each PPM-SPM segment. Data is collected from railroad company called PT INKA MULTI SOLUSI TRADING (PT. IMST) working with 110 suppliers consist of 31 main component suppliers and 79 supporting component suppliers. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to determine the weights of the criteria we need for the two segmentation approaches. The determination of the score is conducted based on the 22 criteria for main component suppliers and 20 criteria for supporting component suppliers. The suppliers are segmented based on the two approaches. A combined PPM-SPM segmentation
is then proposed and discussed. The proposed PPM-SPM hybrid model shows that of the 110 selected suppliers who collaborate with PT IMST, most suppliers are segmented as suppliers of strategic items and non-critical items where there are still many suppliers with low capability and willingness. The combined PPM-SPM segmentation resulted in a total of 16 segments with a different handling strategy design for each PPM-SPM segment.
