Abstract

Market discipline is a response given by market participants to the soundness of banks. The influence of the soundness of the bank on changes in the number of deposits is one example of the occurrence of market discipline. The existence of market discipline can help control bank risk taking, which in turn has an impact on the soundness of the bank. Assessment of the health of a bank can be done using the Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Non Performing Loan (NPL), Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR), and Return On Asset (ROA). There are indications of market discipline in banking in Indonesia which is indicated by the effect of the soundness of the bank on changes in the number of deposits. However, changes in the number of deposits have not been fully responded to by the public. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the soundness of the bank on changes in the number of deposits as a form of implementing market discipline. In this study, the object of the banking sector was listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2014-2020, and there were 265 research samples. In this study, the researcher used the panel data regression method. By using the measurement of bank soundness through Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Non Performing Loan (NPL), Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR), and Return On Asset (ROA) the results show that only Non Performing Loan (NPL) has an effect on changes in total deposit. In addition, by taking into account the type of bank ownership, the results show that the type of bank ownership has no effect on the amount of public deposits.
