Abstract

Environments with salt content tend to be more reactive like brackish water. Sacrificial Anode Cathodic Protection (SACP) is one of the effective methods for corrosion protection in water. The principle of SACP is to use an anode with a lower potential value to be sacrificed so as to protect the cathode. In this study, there are coating variations, namely, coating and no coating, and variations in anode placement, namely 1 anode and 2 anodes. This study aims to analyze the effect of coating layer and the effect of Zn anode placement on the cathodic protection system of API 5L Grade B Steel pipe along 1.5 m with coating variations and without coating and variations in the placement of 1 anode with a distance of 0.75m from the end of the pipe and 2 anodes with a distance of 0.5m from the end of the pipe. This research uses protection criteria of -800 mV to -1050 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Then, environmental data measurements were made at the research site, namely resistivity, pH, salinity, temperature, and Dissolved Oxygen. According to the results of the measurement of the protection potential of all specimens included in the protection criteria in accordance with the DNV RP B401 standard and included in the cathodically protected condition. The average value of pipe protection potential for coating variations with variations in the placement of 1 anode and 2 anodes is -944.400 mV and -947.633 mV. The average value of the protection potential of the pipe variation without coating with the placement of 1 anode and the placement of 2 anodes is -897.233 mV and -899.467 mV. The results showed that the effect of the coating layer on the cathodic protection system of a given sacrificial anode is to provide a longer anode life as indicated by the weight of the anode that is consumed smaller than without coating. Salinity affects the coating layer which can damage the coating so that the anode current can flow and protect the API 5L Grade B steel pipe specimen. The effect of variations in anode placement on the cathodic protection system of a given sacrificial anode is that the increasing number of anodes with a short distance can provide more even protection results because there is less distance resistance to flow the protection current. The weight of the anode consumed in the pipe placement of 1 anode is smaller than the placement of 2 anodes.
